1.05 billion tons

In 2020, China’s crude steel production exceeded the 1 billion tons . According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on January 18, China’s crude steel output reached 1.05 billion tons in 2020, an increase of 5.2% year-on-year. Among them, in a single month in December, domestic crude steel output was 91.25 million tons, an increase of 7.7% over the same period last year.

This is China’s steel production hitting a new high for five consecutive years, and it is probably a historic moment with no one before or after. Due to severe overcapacity leading to low steel prices, China’s crude steel production has rarely seen a decline in 2015. The national crude steel output was 804 million tons that year, down 2% year-on-year. In 2016, with the recovery of steel prices driven by the iron and steel capacity reduction policy, crude steel production resumed its growth momentum and exceeded 900 million tons for the first time in 2018.

While domestic crude steel reached a new high, imported iron ore also showed a flying volume and price last year. The data disclosed by the General Administration of Customs shows that in 2020, China has imported 1.17 billion tons of iron ore, an increase of 9.5%. Imports exceeded the previous record of 1.075 billion tons in 2017.

Last year, China used 822.87 billion yuan in iron ore imports, an increase of 17.4% year-on-year, and also set a record high. In 2020, the national output of pig iron, crude steel and steel (including repetitive materials) will be 88,752, 105,300, and 13,32.89 million tons, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.3%, 5.2% and 7.7%. In 2020, my country exported 53.67 million tons of steel, a year-on-year decrease of 16.5%; imported steel was 20.23 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 64.4%; imported iron ore and its concentrates were 1.170.1 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 9.5%.

From a regional perspective, Hebei is still the leader! In the first 11 months of 2020, the top 5 provinces in my country’s crude steel production are: Hebei Province (229,114,900 tons), Jiangsu Province (110,732,900 tons), Shandong Province (73,123,900 tons), and Liaoning Province (69,505,200 tons) ), Shanxi Province (60,224,700 tons).
